New To Linux, need a new laptop

    Hello.

I'm in the market for a new laptop/ultrabook/tablet.

    Preferably with Ubuntu pre-installed.

Google search did not yield any interesting results.

I know alienware at one point had a linux laptop, but it seems with their new refreshments they dropped that selection.

    Any ideas are appreciated, thanks.

    Budget: $1500-2000
Screen size: 10' (tablet) - 17' (full size laptop)
    OEM: No preferance

Pay attention to the heat related issues I see a lot of comments on the forums. Look at the Laptop Compatibility forum.

    Thread moved to Hardware.

Welcome. Moved here for now but another staff member may move to Recurring Discussions before long as a question that has been asked many times before.

Although most machines come with Windows pre-installed it will be easy enough to wipe the drive and install Ubuntu solo. That opens up your options considerably. Good luck.

I've read that Windows 8 comes with some software that makes installing any Linux software very difficult. That's why I'm looking into a device with Linux already pre-installed.

Any news on Ubuntu tablets? I know Ubuntu has released software that makes Unity work with touch screens, but have any OEM's actually built a device using this software?

I think your concern is valid. Ubuntu can be installed on Win 8 machines but it's another hurdle. I'd recommend looking at Lenovo/Thinkpad. They're selling quite a few new machines with Win 7 it seems, and IME Thinkpad video - at least Intel based video - and most hardware related items just work. Of course I'm biased toward Thinkpads and make no apologies. Personally I wouldn't mind having UEFI given that I like to run several O.S.s on one machine but Secure Boot? Not if I can help it.

+1 for Lenovo. If you want touch the X230t is Ubuntu Certified.
