Post Techradar article "Is the Linux Desktop Dead"

    Well,
It was bound to happened sooner or later. First, the end of the PC. Then that went away. Now with game counsels and smartphones being as powerful as they are, both the PC and the game console have come under fire with "Tech Profits" foreseeing the end of PC's by gaming consoles, and gaming consoles done in by smartphones and tablets, in the near future. Now, with the rise of YouTube, Hulu, and so much online content, many are claiming that the end of TV is near.

So how has Linux avoided such crazy talk? They haven't. Techradar posted an article on their website looking into the question, "Is the Linux Desktop becoming extinct?" Here is the link to the article, it is very long, but it does contain comments from some very big Linux community names. (
Linus Torvalds, Theodore Ts'o, Alan Cox, and more)

Nice article. I don't think the Linux desktop is dead at all. In fact, the way it's looking right now, there's a huge Windows-shaped hole sat right in the desktop space, that would be nicely filled by a smart, forward looking Linux eco-system, be that Ubuntu, Mint, openSUSE or whatever. I think Ubuntu is placed really well to forge forward on the desktop as Microsoft are so quick and keen to abandon it.

Re: Techradar article "Is the Linux Desktop Dead"

OK ! The short, quick and nasty answer is NO !
Look at viewing space, and viability. Most of us have either: laptops, or, celphone/tablet devices. Yes, I have lumped cel phones and tablets together, as it should be.
Storage and security, best option : a desktop, or a very large laptop such as a "desktop replacement". Examples : Acer V3, 17" screen; ASUS G7 series, 17'' screen, 16gb ram.
IF ! the desktop disappears, then an all-in-one or a giant laptop replaces it. No difference.
The real question is : will the Microsoft Windows desktop o/s disappear ?
At this point Microsoft has lashed out to diversify, with tablets, cel phones and portable pencils.
The real leader now, is Ubuntu, on the desktop. Mint may be more "user-friendly" for the beginner, and other distros have specialised appeal. (Red Hat for example) But the obvious standard has been set. Upgradeable Ubuntu.

Nah. Just boring old shill Miguel de Whatshisname being irrelevant again.

When will the year of the Windows desktop come and what are the criteria?

Allow me to invoke Betteridge's Law.

This seems like a rehash of things that were news like, a year ago at least. Note that if you skip to the end of the article, their conclusion is also "no". As far as anyone can tell, Linux seems to be skipping along with the same marketshare it's always had, though there have been some big government deployments in the news lately.

Ooops! "As far as anyone can tell, Linux seems to be skipping along with the same marketshare "
Therein lies the real problem. That seems to be the general misconception.
Also adds to "is the desktop dead".
When I bought my "Zenbook" it came with MS-Win7 installed. Tried it, laughed a lot, dumped it. It runs mucho mejor (lot better) on Ubuntu 12. And Win7 failed to use all of the quad processors, it was really shi-t-t-ty.
Pre-installed crap. The question is, when will manufacturers stop that practice ?

Re: Techradar article "Is the Linux Desktop Dead"

I bet that the guy typed his article on a laptop or a desktop rather than a phone or a tablet. When you can do some hard number crunching on a phone or a tablet then call me from your smart phone.

It seems that there is a misconception that computing devices are only used for consuming media content and nothing else (even then my Linux laptop.--with any distro I have used.--is a lot more flexible than my roommates' iPad with all its limitations, restrictions and DRM enforcement) I find the "desktop is dead" legion to be about on the same par as education pundits who opined that algebra shouldn't be taught anymore because you don't need that to work at Walmart.

Raise your hand if you actually read the article all the way to end.

Re: Techradar article "Is the Linux Desktop Dead"

Yes but there's nothing new here. The truth is, Linux doesn't have to answer Miguel de Izaca's criteria for desktop Linux any more than Windows has to answer ours. It's already here. We are using it.

Anyway, this was posted by the Linux Foundation on Facebook http://www.infoworld.com/d/open-sour...-normal-217818
