Advice on my first computer build

Hey all- I'm building my first computer and happy to say I'll be making it a Linux machine (ubuntu, in particular). I'm certainly a beginner so hoping to get some advice on my choice of hardware. Below is what I came up with from poling around on newegg, which will cost me about $375 (before shipping). Two questions: (1) is this what I should be paying? And (2) are these components compatible with ubuntu? A lot of the time the manufacturer will say they work with Windows but nothing about Linux. Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

Going by your hardware list Ubuntu should work quite well on this setup... My general rule of thumb is Asus components and Intel work well...

For what purpose are you building this computer?
By RAM choice, it does NOT look like you are only going to look e-mail and read news!

I'd say it's a solid entry level PC. Re. wireless - you want to double check that it's compatible with Linux. The rest should be OK.

Are you sure you don't want to add a small (say, 64GB) SSD for root partition? If you're going to use that machine as a server of some sort, you don't need SSD. But anything you directly interact with can really benefit from having at least some fast storage.

    ?

$35 is about as cheap as it gets. And having less than 4GB in a new build isn't wise because browser alone can easily eat 500MB+.

Sounds good. However, check out ASUS motherbords and AMD processors... for the same price you may end up getting more power. AMD dual cores (with more ghz's are more energy efficient then 'outdated' pentiums) are cheap compared to INTEL... so are ASUS Mobos. I don't see a graphics card, is it integrated with Mobo? if so what graphics is it?

Rather check out Intel MBs. ASUS isn't what it used to be. I paid $250 for my Z77 and it's total PoS. My system completely hangs every time I try to plug in any external USB storage. I'll never buy ASUS again.

Actually both Pentium G630 and H61 chipset have integrated graphics.

So you had a bad experience with ASUS... There could be lots of reasons for it... or it could be just that you have what the industry calls, a 'lemon'. Have you checked with Asus? You should get a replacement.

I don't see any issues with what you picked out for hardware. The WiFi card I tend to agree that you better verify its supported by Ubuntu.

It's got a video port on the board but I don't see a listing of the video chip. Other than... "Supported only by CPU with integrated graphic"

Nah, I won't disassemble my rig over something so trivial. I have plenty of USB ports on my other machines. Other problems have been solved by BIOS updates so I don't mention them, but believe me it was a rough ride at first when the MB was really unstable.

The problem is that ASUS isn't really cheap. They need to get their quality control up to snuff.
