Advice on my first computer build

Since you asked, I'll throw in a couple of thoughts...

I'd consider springing for 8GB of RAM - it should only be $5 or $10 more if you don't go for premium memory. I have 4GB in my box and it's more than enough to run any Linux distro, but I find myself a bit RAM-limited if I want to run Linux or Windows in a VM.

Also, are you sure you want to go mini-ITX? Compact cases are all the rage now, but they do limit your future upgrade opportunities and I find them much harder to work in. You might find the additional space inside a mini tower case easier for a first build.

• Save money with an AMD chip
• Spend the savings on more RAM

Are you living near Microcenter? They always have very good Mobo + CPU combo available. You can buy from there for cheap

Check out tigerdirect good barebones systems. All depends on the use of your build.

This will be more than enough to run Ubuntu and pretty much any programs you can think of. I certainly run Ubuntu on much less.

Loose the WD Blue drive; it fails far too often. WD Black or Caviar Green is better I have had one to many Blue Drive failures (DOA) to count I always use Green because it is lower powered.

For what purpose are you building this computer?
By RAM choice, it does NOT look like you are only going to look e-mail and read news!

To inform you, they are really selling complete PC systems with 4 GB of RAM as a standard.

Looks like a reasonable little machine for general desktopage. 4GB of RAM is plenty, I have that in mine and it's more than enough to run Ubuntu (and even the occasional VM too), ging to 8GB on that machine wouldn't give any real benefit IMO. The Pentium chip is a decent option if you're looking to keep the price down, yu can always upgrade that later if you need more smash.

I would echo the SSD suggestion too, if not now then later. They've come down in price, a 40GB Intel drive isn't expensive and is plenty big enough for a Linux root partition.
