I was on the internet before Mosaic was around. Back then everything was telnet & ftp.
One thing I'm 100% certain of is that there was way less crap on the net back in those days compared to today.

When I were young, all this were just fields!
I had been using dial-up connections to University computers for a while to share software (the term FOSS hadn't been invented yet), fonts, etc. When I heard about the WWW and accessed it, I thought it was just another bulletin board. I didn't realize it was something new that would grow into what it is today.
Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.
