    Keyboard Backlight VAIO SVS13

    Hi,

    I've installed 12.10 on a new Vaio SVS13 A290X.

I would like to disable the keyboard backlight, viz:

    http://www.sony-mea.com/support/faq/400592

but haven't found how to achieve this in 12.10.

    Thanks.

Does this file exist in your system:
    Code:
    /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight
If so, what is its value:
    Code:
    cat /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight
If its not 0, try echoing 0 into it to see if it turns off the keyboard backlight:
    Code:
    echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight

    No, that file doesn't exist:
    sony-laptop> ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/

    How about in /sys/class/leds:
    Code:
    ls /sys/class/leds
    ...anything there about keyboard backlight?

    Also, what modules are loaded:
    Code:
    lsmod

Even though enabled seems to be the default, can you try this:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r sony_laptop
    sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight=0
...and see if it disables the keyboard backlight. Look also for any messages that may display on the screen.

Try also with the value 1 just to test.

    Re: Keyboard Backlight VAIO SVS13

I seem to get the same parameters:

    Code:
    ~> modinfo sony-laptop | grep kbd
parm: kbd_backlight:set this to 0 to disable keyboard backlight, 1 to enable it (default: 0) (int)
parm: kbd_backlight_timeout:set this to 0 to set the default 10 seconds timeout, 1 for 30 seconds, 2 for 60 seconds and 3 to disable timeout (default: 0) (int)
    Using the suggested command:

    Code:
    ~> sudo modprobe -r sony_laptop
    ~> sudo modprobe -l sony_laptop
    kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko
    ~> sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight=0
    insmod /lib/modules/3.5.0-27-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0
Doesn't seem to affect the keyboard backlight.

I tried various permutations of kbd_backlight and kbd_backlight_timeout,
it consistenly responds with a 10 second backlight.

    Code:
    ~> sudo modprobe -r sony_laptop
    ~> sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight=1
    insmod /lib/modules/3.5.0-27-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=1
    ~>
    ~> sudo modprobe -r sony_laptop
    ~> sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight=0
    insmod /lib/modules/3.5.0-27-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0
    ~>
    ~> sudo modprobe -r sony_laptop
    ~> sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight_timeout=3
    insmod /lib/modules/3.5.0-27-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight_timeout=3
I recall seeing another discussion on another forum that suggested
the light sensor had to also be disabled... (?)

    Have a read of: http://askubuntu.com/questions/27698...vaio-vpcf236fm.

I'm sorry, but I don't know why you don't have that location on your system.
