    Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04.1 failed

Hello, I have waited till 12.04.1 to be released today to upgrade from 10.04 LTS server edition, and i have tried to upgrade it just now since the first point release has been released today.
    The commands I used are:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    sudo do-release-upgrade
Checking for a new ubuntu release
    Done Upgrade tool signature
    Done Upgrade tool
    Done downloading
    authenticate 'precise.tar.gz' against 'precise.tar.gz.gpg'
    extracting 'precise.tar.gz'
however, I got this error message during upgrade:

    Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
    caused by held packages.
    This can be caused by:
    * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
    * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
    * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
    command 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in a terminal.

I have looked into the /var/log/dist-upgrade

    there is an error

To repair this properly, I would back up your important data and do a fresh install of 12.04.

Re: Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04.1 failed

I forgot to mention that this is a VPS, and the host doesn't provide ubuntu 12 image as an option in the control panel. Also, The reason I posted a question here is that if possible, I would prefer upgrading because there is a lot of custom configurations for the system, and downtime should be as minimal as possible. Thank you.

Re: Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04.1 failed

Not sure if it can help or mess it up more, but to fix broken packages you usually run:
    sudo apt-get install -f

Note that I don't guarantee 100% what will happen and since this is VPS with no physical access, run at your own risk.

In that log there do seem to be loads of broken package messages but I am not sure if some of them are 'broken' before the upgrade starts or during. Because it seems like during which doesn't make much sense.

Re: Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04.1 failed

    This is what I get:
    sudo apt-get install -f
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I am not sure why/when does the package seems to be broken since when I do sudo apt-get update and also sudo apt-get update, I don't get any messages. I assumed everything has been fixed since then.
Any suggestion/input on how I can proceed with the upgrade smoothly is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Well, you can try the do-release-upgrade again but if it fails I don't have any other ideas.

I am looking into upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04.1 myself soon. It seems with any Linux (or perhaps Ubuntu?) distribution upgrade, the recommendation is always to do a backup and clean install.

For whatever reason, upgrading is NOT advised, because of these types of issues.

Based on the error output, there's a TON of packages that have been held back/broken for one reason or another. I assume it's this large list of packages that is causing your issue.

I wish I could help more. I think I'm still going to attempt an upgrade to 12.04.1, but I definitely have backed up all my configs etc in case I do have to reinstall.

As you're running a VPS that doesn't have 12.04 as an option, it might be best for you to wait until they do. 10.04 is going to be supported on the Server platform for a very long time, so you have plenty of time for your VPS to catch up.

Re: Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04.1 failed

You are missing an important step, you have to make sure your current installation is fully up-to-date, before doing an upgrade to a new version. Run the following commands first before trying to upgrade:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    followed by

    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Once the above commands have run, next:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
    followed by:

    Code:
    sudo do-release-upgrade

    cariboo907,

Thanks for that post. I understand the reasoning behind all the commands, except for the install of update-manager-core.

What does this do? Does it apply to the server platform? Thanks.

The core is a prerequisite to do the release upgrade as noted in the upgrade documentation
