Updates will not install

I've not used my notebook for a couple of months and now there are 190 updates to install but I've tried over 10 times to install them but keep getting a daemon crashed message every time.I'm running 11.10

Open a terminal and enter:

sudo apt-get update

Lost already every time I press enter the code just repeats

Ctrl + Alt + t keys; press them all at the same time. That will give you a terminal.

When you enter your password there will be no visual conformation.

Make more sense?
