Difference between Ubuntu and Mint, Under the Hood

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm not sure where to. I was wondering what the "under the hood" differences between Ubuntu and Mint are. Stuff other than the Desktop Environment, default programs and what not that can be interchanged between the two.

Mint is more Windows looking than Ubuntu, with the start menu on the left side. I guess that it is geared toward the windows users to get them to come over to the bright side

kernel updates > Mint updates will not upgrade the kernel

Mint codecs > Mint comes mp3 etc..ready with it's own mutimedia prep. You don't install ubuntu-restricred-extras in Mint

Mint flash-plugin > Mint also packages it's own preparation of the adobe plugin - But you can switch to the official Adobe one

Is the mint flash plugin any better at all? Heck I use an app called minitube just so I don't have to use flash.

Mint is probably my second favorite Linux distribution, following Ubuntu; I would probably switch to Mint, if one day, I prefer to quit Ubuntu (Who know, Ubuntu changed a lot in a short amont of time with Unity, for example).

What bother me, is that Compiz does not seem compatible with it.
Yes, it's unstable and will be dropped ( ), but it's just cool, and CCSM remain extremely useful to manage all my windows.

They are both the same if you are a general user.
If you are a developer, it doesn't make one bit of difference. If you are comfy with the shell, it doesn't matter what you use.

It's little tiny things that usually dictate what distro one uses, things that are mostly aesthetic in nature, and sometimes more practical, for example centOS not working for me without major dinking around with drivers etc. I don't worry about flashy stuff like COMPIZ etc first, I first check if everything that I NEED works, then I move on to UI.

Ubuntu is a great starter distro that keeps getting more mature as time progresses and has a solid community.

P.S: By starter i mean documentation,support etc.
