then select an other kernel to boot with inside the grub menu (if you have at least the previous kernel installed) or select the recovery mode

What image are you booting into? Linux-image 3.8.0-15? Try booting into a previous image - 3.8.0-14 or 3.8.0-13. Look under Advance Options for Ubuntu in the Grub menu.

If you can load Synaptic search for Linux 3.8.0-15 and you will find linux-headers, linux-headers-generic, linux-image-extras-generic, linux-image-generic. All marked 3.8.0-15. Select each one and right click and select Mark for Complete Removal. In your case you might find that each line in marked with a grey icon and you have the right click option if upgrading or reinstalling.

    You may need to try
    Code:
    sudo apt-get -f install
    and
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    Regards.

    Wouldn't this work?

    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge linux-headers-3.8.0-15 linux-headers-3.8.0-15-generic linux-image-3.8.0-15-generic linux-image-extra-3.8.0-15-generic
    then

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-3.8.0-15 linux-headers-3.8.0-15-generic linux-image-3.8.0-15-generic linux-image-extra-3.8.0-15-generic
