Make volume increase at smaller increments?

Just finished installing Ubuntu 13.10 and noticed something that might get pretty annoying in the near future. For example, when I'm playing music, it's almost like I have to either turn the volume all the way off, or turn it like 1/3rd all the way up.

Is there a way to configure the volume +/- settings to increase/decrease at smaller increments? That way I don't have to keep having to manually adjust everything that outputs sound.

This use to be easy to do in gconf-editor (gnome2), but the option no longer exist. Guess its now hard coded.

I found this work-a-round for 12o4, should work in 13.10. Go to post #28.
