Re: help!!! - can not log in after update

this is why i said about xserver.

you were getting the GUI to an extent, you had the login screen (at wrong resolution).

now you dont get the login screen. perhaps try messing about with lightdm, which is the display manager (brings login screen and GUI). but i doubt that will get you anywhere.

is there no way to reinstall your system? i just figure it might be quicker. if you dont have a 12.04/12.10 installer disc/usb, then you could download the installer and create a disc using another person's computer? if you want to use small amount of their internet bandwidth, you can use the mini.iso which is a small command-line installer, requiring wired internet connection. http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/how-t...n-non-pae.html

sorry this is the entent of my being able to help i think. someone with better knowledge and understanding of this area will help.

Please, log in on the text console, install pastebinit and publish the output from /var/log/dpkg.log
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install pastebinit
    awk '$3=="upgrade"' /var/log/dpkg.log|pastebinit
Then post here the link it will give you.

What are you looking for? I assume the kernel version and video drivers. Anything else?
    Thanks

Re: help!!! - can not log in after update

    Hi
I'm back from work now, so back to have another go. I've posted the pastebin link above as requested earlier.

Can anyone help me with a different tack in the meantime? There are a couple of files on there that I really need to get to. Is there a way to somehow get them to my phone (android) so I could email them to my work?

(or should I start a new thread, and leave this one to the video problems?)

Re: can not log in after update

if you do not have a live cd/dvd/usb system you can use, then you will have to do it the command way, should go something like this:
go to the line starting "Connect your usb drive and run"
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...=1#post9145004

    using cd, ls, mount etc

    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    or
    Code:
    sudo parted -l
    will show you your drives/partitions

    Edit:
finally understand how you would check files are on the destination device after copy command.
    Code:
    cd /media
    ls
    cd myusbdevice/home_backup
ls or ls -R or ls -alR
    it is case-sensitive.

Re: can not log in after update

    Hi,
I tried "ls /dev" but it completely fills the screen with 6 columns of stuff, and I suspect the bit I need has scrolled off. I don't see sdb1 or anything like it.

How can I make it not overflow the screen?

Re: can not log in after update

yes that command gives unreadable results to me, try
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l | less
instead to view your devices and determine which it is you want for the destination

to navigate (if needed) press Ctrl + F to move forward and Ctrl + B to move backward.
