    New Laptop Installation

    Good morning everyone!

Well, yesterday I decided to bite the bullet and bought a new laptop to replace my aging PC. The new laptop is an Intel based Asus PC with Intel WiFi, MoBo and processor. Everything worked great with the Live DVD desktop, WiFi connected instantly. Only hitch is a problem with the ClickPad. I have to keep two fingers on the pad to be able to right click anything. Is there a work around for this, or do I have to wait for a new version of Ubuntu to have that patched over?

It also has Windows 8 on it. I want to get rid of Windows and have a fresh, clean and pure linux system (with Xubuntu or Kubuntu).

After some trial and error, I was able to get the system to boot from the Live DVD, which it did in EFI mode (Live DVD Xubuntu 12.04.2). My question is pretty much do I need to do anything in particular when installing Ubuntu on this system? I've seen some of the troubleshooting guides for installing on UEFI systems and they always explain how to set it up to dual boot. However, if I want to completely get rid of Windows, do I simply select install Ubuntu from the Live Desktop and tell it to replace Windows?

Since you have a ASUS, you might take a look at
Ubuntu Specialised Support, Asus Ubuntu Support.
    I have a new ASUS laptop w/ win8 also.

I hope someone replys to your question:
"However, if I want to completely get rid of Windows,
do I simply select install Ubuntu from the Live Desktop
and tell it to replace Windows?"

I'm thinking the same, since I don't need Windoz,
so why not wipe it and install Linux?
But in my old mind this thought comes up:
    Does my laptop require Windoz?
If I install Ubuntu and get rid of Windoz,
will I still be able to boot from a usb stick?
My bios does not seem to have that option and
thus requires Win8 for booting from ubs stick.
My ASUS has no optical drive.

Bottom Line: Is it possible to get our laptops
to run entirely on Linux alone and also be able
    to boot from usb stick?

If you decide to go all Ubuntu play it safe and make sure you burn all the restore disks and repair disk first. I have been on Ubuntu only for years. But if you ever want to go back or even sell the machine you need the restore disks to get WIN back.

Good evening everyone, just thought I'd drop in here and say the installation went flawlessly. I did a complete erase of Windows and installed Xubuntu 12.04.2

    Everything worked instantly.

I'll submit my laptop model in the Laptop Compatibility thread in a bit.

Joreus, did you install using optical drive or usb stick?
I'm guessing via optical drive since you mentioned live dvd earlier.
My ASUS laptop has no internal optical drive and doesn't recognize
my external Samsung optical drive as a boot drive.
I can install via usb stick, but once installed,
I may not be able to reinstall if I have a crash.
I don't trust Ubuntu to activate booting via usb stick or external opitcal drive.
