Not able to connect to internet using wired connection

Hi everyone, I am new to Ubuntu. I installed 8.10 because of my machine restrictions(RAM).
I am using Dlink ADSL modem.
While installing ubuntu, i had my modem ON and network cable connected

When i type ifconfig, i get following result as i have attached in image.
Can any one please tell me wht else i need to do to setup internet ?

Back in the day 8.10 was known for this kind of problem.

8.10 reached end of life three years ago. You need to find something better than that.

If you must install a version that is kind on the resources, try Lubuntu. That is what I am doing on a couple of P4s.

I second the recommendation of Lubuntu. It's just as fully functional as vanilla Ubuntu and is far more lightweight. Try installing Lubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 and see how that works, and if you still have problems, feel free to come back and ask!
    Good luck.
