    Question Gas Meter location

I'm from Canada. My townhouse is more than 30 years old. The gas meter was installed in the backyard mounted on the wall. All homeowners in our townhouse complex has the same thing. I recently conditionally sold my house. The potential buyer did a home inspection, and said that the gas meter is not supported. Does anyone know that gas meter has to be supported by something underneath? Is it a safety issue if the gas meter is mounted on the wall? I'm afraid the buyer wants to pull me down on the purchase price. Any feedback will be appreciated.

    Re: Gas Meter location

I was a gas pipping mechanic for a short time some time ago, and I don't remember meters ever needing support.
However, the rules aside from the general guidelines of the universal plumbing code, are made by place to place basis.

I remember, one town would require earthquake valves and the town next door would not.

But general consensus is that the meter is the property of the gas company, and shouldn't be your problem.
Everything after the meter is yours.

But being that you say this is Canada, what I know can go out the window.

    Re: Gas Meter location

Look around the neighborhood at other home's gas meters. See how they are supported. It's possible that you need some Uni-strut to support the weight of the gas meter, so that an earthquake won't break the gas pipe. It shouldn't cost too much to bring up to code.

    Re: Gas Meter location

To add and clarify to what I wrote earlier.

The meter is normally the property of the gas company.

The gas company routinely reads the meter.

If the gas company hasn't said anything to you about the meter, then how it is now is alright.

    Re: Gas Meter location

Tell the potential buyer you signed up to the Ubuntu forums to get the facts about
gas installation from a bunch of computer geeks.
How can he argue with that logic?
....and while he's stunned by your astuteness, whack a "House For Sale" poster on his back.

Not even April 1 yet and people are still silly enough to take this sort of bait.

    Re: Gas Meter location

Contact your gas company. If they can confirm that you don't own the meter then it's not part of the sale and the buyer has no right to try and beat you down. They may also be able to supply some details or point you at a reference detailing the correct way to install it.

Either way, you need to be talking to them, not us

    Re: Gas Meter location

Take a picture of your gas meter with an Ubuntu sticker on it. That would at least make this thread both relevant and entertaining. Be sure to back up your data to at least one off-site location. If there is an earthquate, your residence may burn down due to an unsupported gas meter and your Ubuntu computers would likely be destroyed.
