How to install Joomla on Ubuntu where to find installation folder and htdocs

Hi all, i want to install joomla on my ubuntu machine
I have installed a webserver this is up and running gives the me the following message
    It works!

This is the default web page for this server.
The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.

Now i have download Joomla but i can t find the folder to copy it in ......
Which folder should i been looking for in Ubunu?

I am following the instruction below although it was setup for windows some parts are similar i guess ?
    .
    1. First, we need to make a folder for Joomla!. Open the folder that you installed
XAMPP into – usually C:\XAMPP or C:\Program Files\XAMPP on Windows.
    2. Open up the folder “htdocs:”
    3. Create a new folder in “htdocs” titled “joomla15.”
    4. Now we need to download the latest copy of Joomla! 1.5 from the net. Go to http://
www.joomla.org and scroll down the left hand side to find “Download Latest” and
click on “1.5” to open the download page:

If you want to use Joomla as your main page and you are using Apache, you'd copy the joomla files to the /var/www directory. You'd then need to run the installation script from a browser.
