Making a network of Ubuntu machines

I've got a few computers all with Ubuntu on them. For a demonstration, I'm trying to figure out how I can configure them so that all the login profile (and all the users' files) is kept on a central server. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

No support requests by PM please.

For a small network, you might NIS easier to set up.
