Smile Wine Gold rated chess game fails to load in 12.04 but does in 9.10

    Hi

I installed a Windows XP compatible package called Majestic Chess using Wine.

When I click the chess game's icon it starts up the CD drive with the Chess Program CD as is required to run the game but then after the CD whizzes around for about 20 seconds, nothing happens.

I am a newbie and running Ubuntu 12.04. I want to try to get this to work as an Anonymous User succeeded in running this chess game out of the box on Ubunto 9.10, Wine 1.1.39 per link below:

    http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...estingId=50536

The CD is required to be in the CD drive and a licence key needs to be typed in to the application on the screen in order to use it in Windows and I am guessing that I need to do something to Ubuntu/Wine to take this into account.

Majestic Chess is a cool game for my kids which is highly rated by everyone I know who has used it. I dont have access to XP and really want to use it in Ubuntu using Wine.

Please could forum members offer some advice.

    Rupert

9.10 is almost 4 years ago.

A gold rating is not applicable to now.

There are many chess games in the repos, search the software centre they are all failry equal, chess is chess, when it becomes important then a good engine is useful and then you are looking at specialist software such as Fritz or Rybka and engines the same or including crafty, houdini etc.

A basic Chess game is just a basic chess game though.

    pychess
    gnuchess
    3dchess
    dreamchess

are a couple which should fulfill your needs

Re: Wine Gold rated chess game fails to load in 12.04 but does in 9.10

Thanks for your reply but I hoped for some generic advice on how to tweak games to work in Wine rather than getting hung up on the fact that its chess. That said, Majestic Chess is not a chess game but rather a structured set of lessons in chess built around a medieval story line with lots of stuff kids really engage with. I have not seen anything like it. It has great graphics. My nephew learnt chess with it and is on his way to becoming a master. Many kids will prefer to learn this way.

As my question is fairly generic in the sense that some Windows applications will have similar types of security (require CD in drive and licence key), I hoped that there may be some generic solution to this as a Wine tweak.

If not please could you explain why a game that worked under a previous version of Ubuntu would not work under 12.04. What changed?

The Windows chess software I want to use worked under version 9.10 but does not under 12.04

What do you think would be the latest LTS version I could download and the corresponding version of Wine that would like still work with this Windows software?

I could experiment by downloading and installing every interbening Ubuntu but hope you can recommend a likely version when Windows software still works in Wine as there has been a change in Ubuntu that somehow stops the chess game from loading correctly as it did in the past,

My idea is to have an extra partition with 8.10 and then I can use that if I want to use the chess game.

install virtual box and run it in a virtual machine.
