FTP sometimes cannot re-connect after connection timed out

Hello, I have Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal) 64-bit. To connect to an ftp site I click on "Dash Home" and insert the ftp address. I am then asked to enter my username and password. This works all fine, I managed to login and see the files on the ftp. However, when I leave the connection idle for some time and try to go to some other folder I am told "The folder contents could not be displayed - Host closed connection". From then on I cannot access the ftp site unless I restart my computer. Is this normal; or there is some steps I can do to prevent this?
