Lightbulb Nokia E71 use as modem with Ubuntu (South Africa)

Just wanted to give a pointer to anybody else that might be struggling with connecting their cellphone to Ubuntu for Internet connectivity.

I just came across it by chance, and it is slightly counter-intuitive.

In Windows (XP, Vista, etc), after connecting the phone with the USB modem to your desktop or laptop you choose the 'Connect PC to web' option on the phone, and it works fine, as described in the Nokia E71 manual.

But in Ubuntu (9.04 & 9.10), you have to select 'PC Suite'. You'll notice that Ubuntu will recognize the carrier and off you go. The Ubuntu option is not in manual (no surprise there) and was struggling to find any resource on the web that gave this easy pointer.

Hope it helps others out there!

thanks for pointing that out. I plugged my E71 on my ubuntu karmic netbook, and selected PC suite as mentioned and it works perfectly.

    thanks again.
