Ubuntu 'Software Centre' has lost search

    Ubuntu 12.04

The keyboard jammed and sent a huge number of characters into the 'Search' bar.

After that 'Search' did not re-appear ! Gulp !

That means I can't install any applications !

I have absolutely no idea how to fix it apart from wiping the hard disc and re-installing from scratch !

    Any thoughts very very welcome.

    A very puzzled,

wonder if that keyboard is really clean ? or if you usually eat/drink/... over it ?

Well I wondered if something had happened to it.

At the moment its working fine.

But would a faulty keyboard prevent 'Search' showing up in the 'Ubuntu Software Centre' ?

A different keyboard is easy, getting 'Search' back is what I'm stuck with.

Loosing Software center doesn't mean that you cannot install any applications. There is a command line way to install an app or package.

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install package-name
If you prefer GUI approach then install synaptic by above method and then you can install applications. Also as mentioned in one thread above, rebooting should fix your problem.

    Hi,
if you go to a terminal and type
    software-center
does it come back? I can't seem to reproduce the effect but was reading an old post from the following and wondering if something has persisted through the versions. There seems to be some folks posting with similar questions back in 2011 but with limited response.

    http://askubuntu.com/questions/83520...oftware-center

    edit:
some other suggestions were to try CTRL+F or looking in the menu for the search menu item.
also, some mention of having the window too narrow in a serious of steps to reproduce in a filed bug for 12.10
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1080665

    Good luck,
    mb.

Re: Ubuntu 'Software Centre' has lost search

Many many thanks for your support.

the more I thought about it, the more I liked the 'Software Centre' and 'Dash' way of doing things. Best I've ever come across. So after getting the terminal working ok with installing, I stoped and did a complete reinstall.

I''m using Google Drive a lot to transfer data into and from the PC, as I've not got confidence in 'Ubuntu One' yet. Got into a tangle with passwords, which I've now sorted out. (I hope)

I think ot was the right decision !

I tried to install Suse 12.3, but it was a disaster as it did not like my hardware for whatever reason. So I abandoned that. The Elegance of Ubuntu shines very strongly by comparrison.

Again thank you all for the support !
