That seems like a long-winded method to me.
I have successfully used plop boot manager in the past and it works fine, I just boot directly from the plop CD though, there is absolutely no need to go to all the trouble of adding an entry for plop to grub.
Just boot from the plop CD and select the 'boot from usb' option.
Cheesemill
+1 for plop boot manager. it even works with a floppy disk.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
Full disk backup (newer kernel -> suitable for newer PC): Clonezilla
User friendly full disk backup: Rescuezilla
