    Oh, thanks. I'd rather avoid Win Vista/7/8 kinda look on my desktop as well as OSx, so I don't mind the absence of applets at all!

    Hey, I actually moved to Debian for a while after Unity debuted. I moved back because Debian was too esoteric and because the MATE fork was finished. It's pretty good, and I'm using it right now.

    Also, if you're going with the Fallback you should mark the thread solved.

    I think you are looking for this tutorial.

    You can use screenlets for adding desktop widgets.
