no entry sign on system menu since 12.10 upgrade

    Hi,

My upgrade didn't go smoothly from 12.04 to 12.10. I think I have everything sorted again now, and the software updater tells me I am up-to date.

However there is a no-entry icon on the top right. I am not even sure what to call it - is it part of the unity bar? Is it the system menu? I think it used to look like a cog/gear.

My question is,what is the no-entry sign trying to tell me? It is bugging me, but there is nothing obviously wrong with my system.

    Thanks

    Tara

That symbol means that the picture (in this case the cog icon) was not found.

I think that the way to restore it is to reinstall your desktop; but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can help.

I changed some settings on the Appearance dialog - wallpaper and theme and the icon has reappeared. (a power icon).

    Not sure what happened.

    Thanks,

    I'm pleased it's solved.

I don't know what happened. I can only guess that the specific theme that you chose does not have the appropriate icon.

If it's a standard theme provided by Ubuntu, and you are using standard Ubuntu, you could give the details of what you chose; we can test to find out if it's a general bug, or something specific to you.
