Chances are you're running a 64-bit version of OS X, so you can technically install 64-bit Ubuntu.

I believe you are able to run the 'uname' command on Mac without installing anything; you can use this to check what your machine supports.

    Code:
    uname -m

I'd go with Cam's advice and try to install the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.
