Video drivers aren't tied to monitors, instead, they are tied to videocards, or more correctly, to video chipsets.

For example, if you're running a Radeon chipset, you'll be using a Radeon driver.
Ubuntu 17.04 Mate, Mint 18.1 Mate; MS Win 8.1, MS Win10 Pro.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.

thanks,.... the system has gone back to normal. i use the onboard chipset in my ASUS M5A88-M .

I had to make some adjustments to Samba and right after that I got high CPU on the compiz process ( 60% cpu steady ) -- and the monitor showed horizontal streaks and ghost images.

i killed the compiz process and then had to hit ctrl-alt-del to logoff the system

on the restart everything seems to be back to normal
