    Can't log into terminal?

I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 and totally new to it. first off, when I open the terminal, it asks me to login, and give my password. I enter my username and password, and it's incorrect. how do I get past that?

What I'm REALLY trying to do is install my wireless card's driver. but I have to gain access to the terminal first.

Is the Terminal on boot, or did you open it from a menu?

I open it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+(func)F1. from the regular interface.

What are you trying yo do exactly? There is usually no need to go to any runlevel other than the one X.Org and Ubuntu start on. If you need a terminal. there is one in the start menu. Just click the ubuntu logo to the side and type "terminal" and then click the terminal icon.
