    Ubuntu crashes when i insert a DVD-ROM

When i insert a DVD-ROM such as Ted, Skyfall e.t.c. Ubuntu completely freezes, and the only way i can do anything again is to hold down the power button until it shuts down. When i boot it up again i have to eject the disc before the login screen appears or else it crashes again.

Btw, i am a novice at this.

Did you install the restricted codecs? Did you look into the system log file? It may give a hint on what goes wrong.

I have the "ubuntu restricted extras" installed. How do i access the system log file? When i type "/var/log/messages" in to the terminal it says "permission denied"
