How to get Lubuntu to automatically update?

I've recently done a minimal install of ubuntu 12.04 with lxde. I can't get it to check for updates on boot. Under "Desktop Session Settings" I have checked Update Notifier to be an automatically started application, but it doesn't seem to work. Even when I open Update Manager it will say that I have nothing to install. But then I click "Check" and a bunch of things will show up to be updated. How can I fix this?

The automatic check is only done once a day (or what ever you set it for). It is entirely possible that there are no updates to install when it does it's check. When you manually check the automatic check may have done many hours before and bingo there are now updates to install. You can leave the automatic update feature do it's job. Try it and see.

    So it's not really Lubuntu.

Why don't you install "lubuntu-desktop"? Perhaps, you've omitted to install some software and "lubuntu-desktop" may provide it.
