Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

Ok "3.2.0-38-generic-pae" is the clue here that "mwdinstall.sh" is not playing nice with the pae modules directory structure. Rather than try and fix "mwdinstall.sh" we should just install it the normal way and check the old one is blacklisted

So here are the commands to do that

    Code:
    cd /home/xristaras/MostUpdatedRealTekDriver
    sudo chown -R xristaras:xristaras RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105
    cd RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105
    make clean
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo depmod -a
Finally check that /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-rtl8192.conf has a line in it that says "blacklist rtl8192cu" so that the old module isnt loaded, it should also have a new line at the end of it. To edit it from the terminal type
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-rtl8192.conf
    .

    All going well reboot!

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

    Hello again,

Still the same problem on the reboot. Does not connect automatically and I have to re-run the mwdinstall.sh script on reboot.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

well it looks like something else is up.

    these lines
"WARNING: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf.save line 45: ignoring bad line starting with 'sudo'
WARNING: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.save line 7: ignoring bad line starting with '^X'"
indicate that those foles have been edited and lines in them are being ignored, but that may or may not be our problem or part of it. It would pay to have a look at them and see what they contain. Copy and paste the contents in your reply then we can see whats going on with them.

the line "make clean" failed probably because there was no makefile in the directory. My bad again I think youll have to "cd" into the directory where the makefile is. Mine is in ...
    "/home/$USER/Downloads/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/driver/rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105"
so yours should be in "/home/xristaras/MostUpdatedRealTekDriver/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/driver/rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/" hopefully?

    Code:
    cd /home/xristaras/MostUpdatedRealTekDriver/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/driver/rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105
    then ...
    Code:
    make clean
    make
    sudo make install
    sudo depmod -a
to check that the old module is blacklisted
    Code:
    grep 8192 /etc/modprobe.d/*
you should see a line with blacklist rtl8192cu

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

You shouldnt have to re-run the old mwdinstall.sh script, you should be able to just do a
    Code:
    sudo modprobe 8192cu
to check which modules are loaded use the "lsmod" command which will scroll down your terminal so to check for just the modules we are working on
    Code:
    lsmod | grep 8192
When the output from that command is rtl8192cu you will have the old module loaded. We dont want that. When the ouput is 8192cu thats the new one.

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

    Hi,
I tried to locate the driver directory. It is locked and would not let me "cd" into it. I found the driver folder in .tar format so I extracted to the same directory. That is why it ends in (2). Still doesn't look like it took. I still need to run the script to access wifi on each reboot. Here is my output: In the grep command, 8192cu is listed in red.

    xristaras@xristaras-linux:~$ cd '/home/xristaras/MostUpdatedRealTekDriver/RTL8188C_8192C_USB_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105/driver/rtl8188C_8192C_usb_linux_v3.4.4_4749.20121105 (2)'

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

1/ Both scripts gain root privelages before they make the driver which is why you are having trouble cd'ing into the directorys, They shouldnt! because they dont need to but thats the way the person wrote them. To fix that a simple
    Code:
    sudo chown -R $USER:$USER /path/to/whatever/directory
will change all the files back to being owned by 'you' and in your 'group'. change "$USER" to your user name. such as
    Code:
    sudo chown -R xristaras:xristaras /home/xristaras/MostUpdatedRealTekDriver/
But youll have to do that after you execute either of those scripts

2/ The next bawk was the line "/bin/sh: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected" I presume that was because of a space in the directory name when it got the (2) appended

3/ make install failed because ther was nothing made to install.

4/ The line "lsmod | grep 8192" returned 8192cu 502561 0 that shows us that the module is loaded

I would suggest doing things in this order
    remove wireless stick
    reboot
    open a terminal and do
    Code:
    lsmod | grep 8192
see if any modules are loaded
    open another terminal and do
    Code:
    tail -f | dmesg
to see what happens next leave it open while we do the next step
plug your usb stick in while watching the dmesg terminal, wait for 1 or 2 minuites just to make sure
Go back to the first terminal and do another
    Code:
    lsmod | grep 8192
and see if the correct module is loaded. Post the results back here

Re: Cannot Recover USB wireless connectivity after kernel update

    Hi,

    Removed stick and rebooted.
the grep command showed nothing. The first line was before inserting the wireless stick and the next two in step 3, after reinserting.
    xristaras@xristaras-linux:~$ lsmod | grep 8192
    xristaras@xristaras-linux:~$ lsmod | grep 8192
    xristaras@xristaras-linux:~$ lsmod | grep 8192
    xristaras@xristaras-linux:~$
In step two I tried the dmesg command. Here is the output. The terminal did not do anything after I plugged in usb stick.
