3.5.0-26-generic caused both my machines to be unusable

I don't have -26 to compare, but perhaps someone else can verify the correct size for vmlinuz-3.5.0-26-generic

I am running the proposed ppa and 3.5.0.26-generic #40. [Updated yesterday]
My vmliuz-3.5.0-26-generic file size is 5.2 MB 5167568 B, only slightly larger than Posted by pfeiffep, I do not have the -25 file to compare.
However, the initrd.img files are hugely different:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2199280 Feb 28 08:11 initrd.img-3.5.0-25-generic 2.2MB -22 to -25 all virtually the same, and smaller than pfeiffep's..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15110631 Feb 28 08:05 initrd.img-3.5.0-26-generic 15.1MB

I do not know the significance of the difference, but -26 runs on my set-up without any problems:

This is causing some difficulty in upgrading other packages ... like this failure:

Since I'm perfectly satisfied with kernel 3.5.0-24-generic I took a more assertive action

I'm curious what precipitated this;

and what implications are there to "freezing" my system at 3.5.0-24-generic while I explore raring in a separate partition?
