Question Why is UbuntuForums upgrading vBulletin?

Is there issues with the current forums? It already seems fast, easy to use, etc.

What will be the benefits for us end users as far as version 3 vs v4?

I've been a lurker for years and a member for a long time too and would like to know a bit about what will be changing.

This reason we are upograding, to a new version of vBulletin, is because there are some security issues that can't be solved with the present version, and there are some features we'd like to add, that aren't available in the current version.

Plus we like new and shiny.

Ok the security issues make sense. I'm sure they are pulling support for vb3 as vb5 will soon be launched. I use to spend a lot of time on vb.com and vb.org esp tuning, migrating "big boards".

So I genuinely wish you guys a seamless transition.

The main feature we want is something to battle spam, that wasn't available in the previous version.

    On our wishlist is tapatalk.

Everything you mentioned is built into http://www.invisionpower.com/apps/board/

They integrate with http://www.stopforumspam.com/ as well, so I've never managed a forum using their software that has had SPAM "issues".

...also their forum software comes with a amazing smartphone/mobile version already built-in and easily customized, with user agent detection.

IMO vBulletin as lost their way, esp since change of ownership (selling out). With the previous owners launching http://xenforo.com/ now VB is suing them lol.

But even the great DigitalPoint.com moved away from vB. :/ So really not many vB "Big boards" are making changes/upgrades, rather migrating to the better alternatives.

I think vB version3 was their peak! Arguably the best forum software version of all time. You'll find that vB 4 has performance issues and I mean in a addition to just the added load of features. (unless they've resolved as its been more than a year since I used vb 4)

That said if you can keep the vb3 feel with the added features it would be cool. But as it stands now, once you login, right away its "different" on every click.
