    libreoffice toolbar tools stop working

I am using libreoffice calc 3.5.7.2, and after working fine, today when I click on the "font color", "background color", or "borders" tools from the toolbar, instead of getting a box to choose the color, the window title bar goes gray. How do I get back the old behavior? So far I have tried removing ~/.config/libreoffice and completely removing and reinstalling all libreoffice packages, but that does not help. I have the same problem whether I use the cinnamon desktop or the gnome no effects desktop. I am running ubuntu 12.04. I can change the background color by highlighting cells, right clicking on "Format Cells", choosing the "background" tab and choosing a color. But I want to use the toolbar button.

I installed libreoffice-gtk and now the tools work. However, the toolbars look different. Here are "before" and "after" screenshots.
