    Reading download manual

New user. I am sure a simple solution.
I downloaded a Getting Started Manual from Ubuntu Software Center .
I can see in document viewer, but cannot figure out how to access and read the content.

    Reading download manual... kde?

    What do you mean?
If you're using kde/kubuntu/plasma the document viewer is probably ocular.
If you want to say you can't open the manual (pdf or so) with the document viewer you could try open the document viewer by pressing opening the dash or kickoff if you have kde (similar to the start menu) and type in document viewer.
the ctrl+o and open your pdf file.
^^if you download files they will most probably be in ~/downloads or /tmp
I don't know where the ubuntu software center stores the ebooks/manuals...

in case you didn't know the ~ stands for /home/user so ~/desktop is something like /home/mark/desktop
    on linux you don't have a C-drive but it just says / --> C:\windows\system32 will be /windows/system32

    Re: Reading download manual

    What manual is it exactly?

Knowing the manual could help us figure out how to read it.

Ubuntu comes with a built-in getting started page, which is essentially from this:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/

Simply pick the version you're running.

The program name on your system is 'help'.

@deadflowr, I just got the app from Software Center, It is installed as a "program" I guess so it has a "desktop" file and an icon that shows in the launcher and the dash????

So anyway, on Unity Desktop it executes just fine so I know not the issue with KDE?

If you download from the ubuntumanual site you just get a PDF.
Don't know why Software Center does it this other way.

Is it the Getting Started with Ubuntu 12.xx?

I thought that was just Ubuntu-Manual.

In which case, I don't know how helpful it would be as Ubuntu Manual is Unity-centric.

    +1 Good point!
Don't know, I would presume kubuntu centric is available too?
But yeah if Software Center gives the Ubuntu version to kde users then it would be somewhat useless to them.

I don't have kubuntu desktop installed so I have no clue???

    Re: Reading download manual

This is the closest I can find to a Kubuntu guide, though I'm not sure it's downloadable:

    http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Kubuntu_Quantal

This is quantal version, at least.

It'll probably be more helpful, as it won't keep telling you to open the dash.

Edit: Yes it's downloadable. It has ebooks, and PDFs.

    Re: Reading download manual

More info: I have Ubuntu 12.10 installed. I downloaded "Getting Started with Ubuntu 12.10" from the Ubuntu Software Center. If I look in Ubuntu Software Center under
"Installed" it is listed under Books and Magazines.
I just can't figure out how to read it.

    Re: Reading download manual

Ok, so Regular Ubuntu, and not KDE variant Kubuntu?

In that case, you'll need to open the dash and search for it.

At the left-side of the screen is a line of icons. This strip is called the launcher.
At the top of the launcher is an icon that has the Ubuntu logo in it.
Click that icon and a sub screen will appear. This is the dash.

Now the top area of the dash has a search bar, type the name of the program you installed.
A list of applications and files will appear, find the one that matches the program you installed and click on it.
It should automatically open, or at least start to open(depending on the system, it might take a minute or two, but once you click on the app in the dash it should start loading it with the program needed to use it.)

    Re: Reading download manual

Thank you ,thank you , thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That worked. That is all I was trying to find out not the quality or content of what I had downloaded, but how to access it.
