That XP has to be POS version, with 600MB it can't fit there. Ubuntu can't fit either.

Look into Lubuntu system requirements but I think it doesn't fit also.

If he really wants linux that bad, you might need to look at something like Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux.

There isn't much that runs on 600MB. Hell, usb sticks are much larger these days.

This thing is probably almost half my age I don't know what's in this POS!! Darnit man!!!

thanx for your help I may go with puppy linux.. Dunno. I told him this is a project and will take a few days till I figure it out.

    Enjoy!!!

ubuntu core is the smallest flavour of ubuntu...
you need a live-CD to install ubuntu core.
    partition your hdd
copy the core files to your hdd
chroot into your ubuntu core installation.
    sudo apt-get install linux
    and install a bootloader.

but If you didn't understand what I said, it's better to just use lubuntu or so.

Here is a $25 computer that runs Linux: http://www.raspberrypi.org/

If you look on Craigslist/Freecycle/Goodwill, you can find a decent system at free/low cost. Better yet, ask your friends/family/co-workers. People are giving away dual-core Windows Vista computers now that Windows 8 is out!

Don't waste your time figuring out how to fit Linux on a 600mb hard drive in 2013 when you can get a 1gb thumb drive for $4.99 or a 1tb hard drive for $99.99!
