Sound issue: External speakers not working
I recently decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my almost 3 year-old laptop (Dell studio 1747, specifics below). I encountered some problems, most of which were solved by updates and driver installs. However, one remains: I cannot use external speakers.
The built-in speakers on my laptop work fine. When I plug in the 3,5mm jack plug, sound settings shows them as ' headphones', and the volume output even changes, so it definititely detects them. They just refuse to make a sound.
The speakers and the two jack ports on my laptop are fine. They've always worked while windows 7 was on there. I even tested them using windows after installing ubuntu, and they still do.
The speakers are a fairly cheap Thrust 2:1 set. I forgot the type. Laptop is connected to sub, sub is connected to speakers. I see sound settings has actually set subwoofer volume to minimum, but I cannot change it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If any more info is needed, let me know.
P.S. How can I get Ubuntu to show a list of hardware, equivalent to Windows' device manager?
