    10.04 lts to 10.10

I'm currently running 10.04 lts on my desktop. I still receive security updates, etc. via the update manager with out hesitation.
I recently picked up a Dell vostro 1000,AMD 64 and my tech installed version 10.10 on it. I'm having some "plugin not loading" errors and tried to update running the "update manager". But is says this version is no longer supported.
What are my options, I really don't care for the newest 12.0 release. I think I would rather have the 10.04 lts.

10.04 will reach end-of-life in April 2013. 10.10 has already reached its EOL because it wasn't LTS. 12.04 will be supported till April 2017 and it's probably the way to go if you don't like 12.10.

"Tech" isn't the word I'd use

10.10 indeed went end of life April 2012.

Options could include 12.04 but use a different desktop environment if it is Unity that you object to, try Xubuntu which uses the Xfce desktop environment.

HA!.. he'll love that.."Tech"... I wondered 'why' he would install a version that wasn't supported any longer.
I guess I'll try 12.04 xubuntu. Sounds like I better get acquainted with it. THANKS.

Download and create a Live cd or USB stick and run it in Livemode so you know what you are getting.

It is very good, other than the different desktop environment, there are some application differences, eg thunar is the default file manager where it's nautilus in Ubuntu, parole instead of totem, gmusicbrowser instead of Rhythmbox and so on, but if you have particular applications that that like from Ubuntu, then they can be installed into Xubuntu via the software manager.

Just to add that you will have to think about your desktop shortly, as 10.04 goes end of life April 2013.

You can also run Gnome Classic on Ubuntu 12.04. It looks like the old 10.04 desktop.

Here's the details of how to do it. I use it a bit, but actually have not yet decided if that or Xubuntu will be my refuge when my much loved 10.04 loses support in three months time.

Another option to the good one above. Use Ubuntu Software center (if you are uncomfortable with terminal to install LXDE desktop). It is super light and fast. LXDE stands for Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment.

Once installed reboot. At the Ubuntu sign on screen, just above and right to the password entry box click the little ubuntu symbol. Choose LXDE and choose use this. LXDE will now be your default desktop. Log in and welcome to LXDE.

    Re: 10.04 lts to 10.10

LXDE might not be for everyone (especially if there are some features in Gnome that they might miss), but I had great success with it on older laptops that didn't run Xubuntu with the default XFCE desktop very well (there was almost no performance gain when compared to Ubuntu). In fact, adding LXDE to Xubuntu made it just as fast on very old hardware as the lightweight Lubuntu.

For my newish and newer family laptops, I still prefer 10.04 Lucid Lynx with Gnome. The longer support cycle makes it easier to manage for me, but now I'll have to try something new as well, with the end of support for Lucid Lynx in April.

    (2) Toshiba Portégé 3490CT, PIII 700 MHz, 256MB SDRAM, 100MHz.
Both using NETGEAR MA521 Wireless PCMCIA (no issues!).
