    Vaio brightness control

I cant get the brightness of my screen to change on my Sony VGN-FZ340E. It is stuck on max brightness, which not only kills my battery, but is extremely birght. The fn f5/f6 doesn't work, nor does the applet. There isn't an option in system/preferences/appearance and it says my graphics card (some kind of nvidia) is preventing me from using system/preferences/display. I am running 64-bit 9.10.
