    User accounts/Administrator/Root

Hi, after installing Lubuntu 12.10 I set up a standard user account for myself instead of an administrative one. From what I understand an administrator account is a root account, which generally shouldn't be used. Have I understood this correctly? Also, when you have to authenticate some action in the gui by giving your login password, is that the equivalent of using the sudo command in the terminal? Just trying to get my head around all of this.. Thanks for any help.
