    Wubi problems

i have a Toshiba satellite c855d-s5307. it came preinstalled with windows 8.
i have since then "upgraded" to windows 7 in CSM boot mode and installed Wubi.

after about 5 minutes or so Wubi freezes up or the wifi disconnects. and restart is the only option.

when i tried to install from usb/dvd it will not detect windows and shows the entire hard drive blank.

really not sure were i can go from this point. i have to have it ready to use by monday.

    Re: Wubi problems

Boot from the usb/dvd to a live desktop and run the bootinfoscript to give some info on the disk. Thanks

    Re: Wubi problems

    This is the reason:

    Code:
GUID Partition Table detected, but does not seem to be used.
    For the full output:
    Code:
    Drive: sda __________________________________________________ ___________________

    Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes

Partition Boot Start Sector End Sector # of Sectors Id System

    /dev/sda1 * 2,048 206,847 204,800 7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS
    /dev/sda2 206,848 925,571,071 925,364,224 7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS

GUID Partition Table detected, but does not seem to be used.
What this means is that the disk once had a GUID partition table (GPT) and now has a MBR partition table, but there is a leftover bit of GPT. For whatever reason, "parted" errors out for this condition. And since parted is used by the ubuntu installer (ubiquity) it won't allow you to do a normal dual boot install.

Wubi should work with the standalone install (which doesn't use ubiquity, but rather a preinstalled, compressed diskimage), so I suspect it is freezing because of some hardware incompatibility.

So... 2 things you want to do.
    1. Figure out the hardware issue - you can use your Wubi install for that.
    2. Get rid of that leftover GPT data so you can do a normal dual boot. You can refer to this for that: http://www.rodsbooks.com/fixparts/

PS, edit your previous post and put [CODE][/CODE] around the bootinfoscript result to make it more readable. Thanks

Yeah sorry... I would be commenting on that question so that others with the same hardware might respond. There might also be some bug reports. I'll do some searches, but your best bet are people that are also affected.

The only other option is to run Ubuntu in a virtual machine. They work fine as long as you're not planning to do graphics intensive stuff.
