Hi, People say KDE is insanely customizable, but I am unable to remove those ugly arrows (see the attached screenshot) from desktop icons in ubuntu 12.10 kde 4.9. Sombody please guide me.

Is this a folder view that you created? The arrows indicate those files are links.
yes, those are links in the folder view.
A workaround:

Its even easier to have your desktop set as "folder view" so that it acts like real desktop.
From there you can go into your menus and drag the program to the desktop "copy here" , giving you a clean icon, without a shortcut arrow.
Though you might notice a red "!" and then you'd have to give it execution permissions.
