Intermittent screen blanking after graphics card changes

    Hello everyone,
I have had two machines with the same problem. At first I thought it was the unusual aspect ratio of the monitor(s) 5:4 (1280 x1024) but this seems to be irrelevant now as the displays are rock solid until the graphics card(s) are changed.

My parents machine with Ubuntu 12.04 x64, did have an ATI X300SE card that I swapped for a NVidia GE210 last year. Pretty much straight away it had Intermittent blanking problems.

It can be fixed by changing resolution (until system updates need doing)

My own machine is running Ubuntu Studio 12.04 with the same model of monitor as my parents. With virtually identical hardware.

I tried swapping the graphics card and the same problem occurs. This time though it was same brand (ATI) and almost identical card revision.

I provide technical support for a few friends and would really like to find out how to remedy the blanking, as it's a dead-cert that it will happen again sooner or later.
