    Backing up before distro upgrade

Hi i have a slave drive mounted and have moved all my data there before an upgrade of Artistx which is a Multimedia version of Ubuntu. Now when i install Artistx should i have the slave drive not connected and then reconnect it after the install? Will my files still be there?

As long as you do not designate the slave drive in the install-upgrade process, your files should be there.

But, yeah, disconnecting - removing the slave drive would be the absolute safest protection of your data. And personally, that is what I do, with a portable drive - back up data and remove the drive before an upgrade

It worked. Thanks so much. A good side benefit too was that all my bookmarks and browser setting were saved. I have forgotten to back them up and only realised 5 minutes into the installation....how clever of Ubuntu to do this for me :0)
