    Re: black screen

    Hi ,
probably a graphics card - or - driver problem.

Give more info please , open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and apply the commands below (one at time)
    Code:
lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga
    sudo lshw -C display
    lsb_release -rcd ; uname -r
Please click on "New Reply" and put the results inside [CODE] tags to be easier to read. See here how

ps: You can do all above from a Live Session (CD/DVD/USB) if you cannot login at all.

    Thanks

    Re: black screen

    Hi ,

your system seems ideal. No graphics problem (Correct driver is loaded) .. strong cpu and a lot of physical memory.. what would it be ?

    Hmmm..

    An HDD error ?
    Lets preclude this possibility..
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install smartmontools --no-install-recommends
    sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda
Also , do you remember if you installed something recently ?
Lets take a look to you sources.list also
    Code:
    find /etc/apt  -name '*.list' -exec bash -c 'echo -e "\n$1\n"; cat -n "$1"' _ '{}' \;
And lets examine some other logs.
    Code:
    cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -e WW -e EE
    cat .xsession-errors
    Thanks

    Re: black screen

Well , you know what ? I have not further ideas. You system (As I said before) seems ideal and I guess is brand new. You hard disk is brand new (15 Power_On_Hours)..

Xorg.0.log seems clean to me .

.xsession-errors have some Errors , but I don't think you will get black screen from these errors.

    The errors
    Code:
    ERROR:layout.cc(160)
    ERROR:render_widget_fullscreen_pepper.cc(275)
are very likely from Chromium or Chrome (you have installed) , but I don't think that affects the desktop environment (black screen result).

This behavior (black screen) appears often ?

    Thanks

    Re: black screen

Is this a stand alone, dual boot, or wubi (installed within Windows) installation?

Also another thought: since it is using the i915 driver, try putting i915.modeset=0 in the boot line. If that doesn't work, change it to i915.modeset=1.
