arecord / aplay

I am trying to get arecord and aplay to work after I make an SSH connection, and I cannot hear any audio. it only works if I use this command "ssh username@ipaddress arecord -f cd | -f cd -t wav" I only hear the audio from my microphone if I havent made a connection. If I try the same connection after the ssh connection it will display the info but no audio. Is there a way to get the audio working after already making the ssh connection?
