Gnome Classic in the new Gnome 3.7 branch

I have upgraded my RR setup with the new Gnome3.7 branch.
Here I use the Gnome3 Staging PPA.

Well after upgrading everything, I noticed that the session Gnome Classic (No effects) does not work anymore.
However the session Gnome Classic works just fine.

Of course I could not upgrade the packages gnome-panel, gnome-panel-data and libpanel-applet-4-0. So these are still v. 3.6.2. The apckages metacity, metacity-common and libmetacity-private0a are v. 2.34.13.

Probably not surprising since they said metacity and the fallback session would be history in 3.8. Is 3.7 just a sort of transitional version between 3.6 and 3.8?

I'm not well versed in how Gnome handles their releases

    From here:

    https://live.gnome.org/ThreePointSeven

GNOME 3.7.x is an unstable development series intended for testing and hacking purposes. GNOME uses odd minor version numbers to indicate development status, so this unstable 3.7.x series will become the official 3.8 stable release.

I certainly don't have this all figured out but it looks like the new "classic mode" is actually going to be a "GNOME Legacy" session:

Re: Gnome Classic in the new Gnome 3.7 branch

GNOME Classic (No Effects) "works" here with the GNOME3 Staging PPA. Some caveats are:

    1. metacity, gnome-panel, and gnome-applets do not currently have a maintainer (indicator-session, the piece of code that enables indicators to work in GNOME Fallback, doesn't really have a maintainer either, which helps to explain why 11.10 didn't include it)
    2. Support code and workarounds been removed from gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center. You can see the full list at the master bug. This is mostly mitigated in Ubuntu since the default configuration includes the Ubuntu "indicator" status menus. The Ubuntu developers will make it a high priority to ensure that the status menus still work but since Ubuntu 13.04 will be sticking with GNOME 3.6 there isn't pressure for them to do that work now.
    3. gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center have some regressions and brokenness because several Ubuntu patches haven't been ported to the new version yet

You can try out GNOME's current "GNOME Classic" mode now by installing gnome-shell-extensions from the GNOME3 Staging PPA and selecting GNOME Classic from the login screen. (The previous GNOME Classic sessions have been renamed back to GNOME Fallback).

Re: Gnome Classic in the new Gnome 3.7 branch

When I try to install 'gnome-shell-extensions' I get this:

    Code:
    lance@lance-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions
    [sudo] password for lance:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree

The following extra packages will be installed:
      gir1.2-gtop-2.0
The following NEW packages will be installed:
      gir1.2-gtop-2.0 gnome-shell-extensions

trying to overwrite '/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-classic.session', which is also in package gnome-session-fallback 3.7.2-0ubuntu1~raring1
    Errors were encountered while processing:

    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
    lance@lance-desktop:~$
That was easily resolved by purging 'gnome-session-fallback'. I got logged into the new classic session, just now poking around.

For some reason gdm is eating my lunch, I might try 'lightdm' for a while just as a work-around.

You should just be able to do:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-shell-extensions_3.7.3-0ubuntu1_all.deb

Thanks. That should have been fixed earlier today by gnome-session 3.7.2-0ubuntu1~raring2. I fixed it in raring's 3.6 version before my previous post here but forgot that the staging PPA had a newer version that needed fixing too.
