    Well after upgrading everything, I noticed that the session Gnome Classic (No effects) does not work anymore.
    However the session Gnome Classic works just fine.

    Of course I could not upgrade the packages gnome-panel, gnome-panel-data and libpanel-applet-4-0. So these are still v. 3.6.2. The apckages metacity, metacity-common and libmetacity-private0a are v. 2.34.13.
    If you need the Gnome Classic (No effects) session, how about adding this file to /usr/share/xsessions

    [Desktop Entry]
    Name=GNOME Classic (No effects)
    Exec=gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback
    TryExec=gnome-session
    Icon=
    Type=Application
    X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=gnome-session-3.0
    and this to /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions

    [GNOME Session]
    Name=GNOME fallback (Safe Mode)
    RequiredComponents=gnome-panel;gnome-settings-daemon;
    RequiredProviders=windowmanager;
    DefaultProvider-windowmanager=metacity
    DefaultProvider-notifications=notify-osd
    DesktopName=GNOME
    if matacity is not around, change it to gnome-wm, and see what would happen. You have to log out and in to get at the session.

    Thanks. That should have been fixed earlier today by gnome-session 3.7.2-0ubuntu1~raring2. I fixed it in raring's 3.6 version before my previous post here but forgot that the staging PPA had a newer version that needed fixing too.

    Any idea how to start gnome-fallback from .Xsession (startx)?
    Gnome-session-fallback does not work anymore after installing gnome-shell...
    It works nicely from both gdm and lightdm...

    I think the fallback session is intentionally deprecated now. I sort of did a roadmap here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...53&postcount=1

    But since then I've also learned that the new "classic" session may be called "GNOME Legacy":

    http://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/2012/...happening-now/

    After using it just a bit, and flip-fopping back and forth with Ubuntu-GNOME-Remix 12.10 to compare some things against extensions not yet available in GNOME 3.7 (particularly "Panel settings"), I truly think this new "legacy" mode may be the perfect solution

    I was not precise enough...
    Fallback is working if I invoke it either from {light,}dm but I do not see a way of invoking it from .Xsession (startx) as I used to do before... Even though it might be in user mode... I'll see...
    I am writting this from fallback session in lightdm... Nice...

    I'm using a pure Ubuntu-GNOME-Remix install via mini.iso:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...7&postcount=17

    So if you're using an actual Ubuntu installation I'm sure things will differ

    Same here, I use gnome-fallback session from GDM.
    However, the session gnome-fallback (no effects) session does not work.
    Anyway, as I do not need it, I'm not going to try to fix this.

    Here gnome-fallback(no effects) work... Just writting from it... LightDM is even a better choice...
    Just I did not figure out how to make it work without DM, straight into X (startx)...

    Perhaps because I have a very minimal setup, I may have crippled it by removing something it needs. No problem anyway because gnome-fallback is OK.

    BTW. Is that dog yours? What is the breed?
