Question Whats the difference between Ubuntu & OpenSUSE?

Yeah... I have to ask whats the difference between these two OS's,
    I found a DVD with OpenSUSE 11 (I think that's it)
main question is is there anything I should now before trying it?
I mean Can I use .deb's on it like I can with any Ubuntu based OS.

And another thing is OpenSUSE based off Ubuntu??

I know this seems like a newbie question, but I have no idea about any other Linux OS's, I only have exp with ones that are based off Ubuntu.

OpenSuse will not use .deb files. It uses .rpm packages instead.

Suse is a very venerable branch of Linux that dates way back into the 90's. It does a lot of low-level things differently than Ubuntu does.

Probably the biggest user-level differences are OpenSuse's YAST, which is a system control-panel type application that gives you a GUI for all kinds of services and system-level things; and the release cycle, which is a bit longer than Ubuntu's.

I used OpenSUSE 11.4 for 495 days and it never let me down. I am a Linux SysAdmin and OpenSUSE is as rock-solid as they get. "Easy to learn?" ... How hard are you to train?

    +1 for OpenSUSE.

If you're comfortable using Ubuntu now and using another package Manager (zypper) doesn't scare you away, then I'd go for it. Maybe try it out in a VM?

You can even try it out online at http://susestudio.com/

P.S. I'm using slackware13 now and you know why I installed that? Because after 495 days of OpenSUSE, I felt I needed a more challenging Operating System. But I am sicker than most...

Re: Whats the difference between Ubuntu & OpenSUSE?

I added openSUSE 12.1 (KDE) back in April. My first time using the distro. It's really quite nice. YaST is excellent. Take a look at their home page: http://www.opensuse.org/en/

Definitely a distro worth checking out. See the following page for various download options:

    http://software.opensuse.org/121/en

openSUSE 12.2 should be out sometime in September.

I don't think zypper will scare me away. especially after all I've had to be scared of on ubuntu, lol.
I'll be trying it in the morning on another hard drive on my computer.

Thanks the links!, Looking at what it looks like so far its looks pretty nice
And I have to see what this YaST is to see whats all the hub bub
So far from what I've seen it seems like Ubuntu just with some massive differences.

Believe me, if you have overcome the Ubuntu Software Manager, you will have no trouble with YaST.

    zypper is just yum. easy.
    YaST really is the kicker.

Re: Whats the difference between Ubuntu & OpenSUSE?

The first difference that presents itself is the choice of downloads. Ubuntu comes in a one installable live CD or alternatively, a one CD installer. OpenSUSE comes first in a five CD or one DVD installer. They also offer a one CD installable system as well in either a GNOME or KDE flavor. Of course, Ubuntu is the only one who will send you a CD for free.
