HOWTO: Hoary ClearType-like fonts

I did this to my xorg.conf:
Section "Monitor"

and restarted X.

then:
>xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (491x368 millimeters)
>xdpyinfo | grep resolution
resolution: 53x53 dots per inch
>

I tried to adjust the numbers in xorg.conf but it does not affect resolution in any way.

Under Gnome, everything's fine, but under E17, Gnome apps seems to think it is 53dpi and that hurts.

(Fonts are set to 96dpi in Gnome.)

Any advise?

I've yet to find a Linux distro with good looking fonts out of the box, in general my Linux font's look inferior to my Windows Clear Type fonts, there is however one exception. The gOS linux distro does have good looking fonts imo, I wonder if there's a way to copy the fonts & config file from a gOS system into Ubuntu without conflicts, I don't even know what gOS is based on, or whether copying files into Ubuntu would work ?

gos is Ubuntu + Enlightenment for window manager.

As for fonts, sorry, can't help.

Why not use gos directly? It is so far proving to be better UI than GNOME and GNOME apps work there

for all users

I don't like E17 ... but, I did use the guide from page1 and have to say everything looks much better for it, I imported the Tahoma font and found that the choices made in Gnome's Font rendering panel under "hinting" had the biggest effect on my LCD monitor, I'm quite happy with my fonts now so many thanks to whoever wrote the guide.

Just quickly, I was wondering if there is anything similar to Window's "standard" font smoothing? - When I say standard, it is an option from the following:

1. None
2. Standard
3. Cleartype

in display\appearence\effects (or something like that )

Hello Everyone,

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 x64 and this how-to is not working for me. I followed the instructions and i changed the fonts to Tahoma (System -> Preferneces -> Appearance -> Fonts; i changed everything to Tahoma) and my desktop looks worst than before. I decided to follow this howto because i have installed Firefox 3.0b5 and Firefox 32-bit 2.0.0.14. With default fonts (Dejavu Sans) my system looks perfect along with Firefox 3.0b5 but not Firefox 32-bit 2.0.0.14.

So the question is how i can improve the antialiasing in Firefox 32-bit 2.0.0.14
