My understanding is Gnome3 & Unity went in two different directions.

Don't know if they'll ever fix it.
Thought so.Mark is pretty commited to his Unity!

I did my install from daily build gnome buntu, and then added unity-desktop just to test,
Just dosent matter if it worked or not I have become a gnome-shell guy..
or even KDE has grown on me.
    Thanks zika

    As a followup...

I haven't tried Unity today. Let's see what happens.

    No joy!

The missing panel service seems new, though.

Can't see much reason to run unity in a staging ppa install but as Zika mentioned it will run sans the panel indicators

The actual error would be -
/usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libido3-0.1.so.0: undefined symbol: ubuntu_menu_item_factory_get_type

This is likely from the absence of a ubuntu specific patch to gtk, & or something else changed in gtk-3.9.xx
    (defined in ubuntu_gtk_custom_menu_items.patch

~Cool! I assumed everyone was having the same problem... all three of us. LoL!

I think I'll try to resurrect Unity, this weekend.

    Re: GNOME3 Staging PPA

It seems that I've lost GDM after this morning's upgrades... Heads up...
After loosing LightDM via introducing Mir, I'm now on Slim/startx/xinit...
    Fun never stops...
I still have to find a way of resurecting GS and Unity through Slim/startx/xinit...
    Long live Awesome/Enlightenment...
Never mind, around last midnight I lost access to my disk (I was changing fstab and I had to chroot sleepy and tired...)
Update₁: Resurected both... (GS and Unity in GDM)...

We have an idiom around here, "Nothing good happens after midnight."

Glad to hear you got 'it' working again.

    Thanks, for the heads-up!

    Cheated death, again!

Just did an upgrade, and GDM is still working.

Gotta say, the GDM login screen (gdmgreeter) is looking sexier all the time...
